Section 5: Mentorship Agreement

For a successful and productive mentoring relationship to happen, it is important that both the ‘mentor’ and ‘mentee’ have a common view of their roles and understand how to get the most out of their experience. The aim of this agreement is to clarify the expectations and commitment of both mentor and mentee. Before completing sign-up, please review and consider the following information about roles and expectations regarding time and commitment.

Commitment

The mentor-mentee ‘formal’ relationship will go from February-June 2026, with an additional informal period of 2 months (August 2026). It is structured with a beginning and an end.
You will be expected to meet a total of 3-5 times.
Meetings will typically last an hour and can be conducted in person, via webcam, or by phone.
If mentor and mentee wish to meet more than 3-5 times during the program, that is acceptable but not required.
After the program months, there is no requirement for the mentor and student to meet; however, if both parties agree, the mentoring relationship can continue.
Mentees will be asked to log (online) their monthly meetings as part of the program reporting structure. Mentors are not required to complete monthly logs but are encouraged to keep track of mentees’ development and complete a final program evaluation in July.
The Program Coordinator will check in periodically with mentors and mentees to ensure everything is going well and is available to troubleshoot any challenges that arise.
Please note: the student is responsible for driving the mentoring relationship. Once matched with a mentor, the student will contact the mentor to set a time to meet.

Mentoring Objectives

Mentoring goals will differ based on the specific needs of students; however, general objectives of mentoring are to assist students to:

Discover career paths (explore personal preferences and career options)
Develop a plan/ strategy towards future career goals
Create networking strategies
Gain practical workplace insights from mentors
Learn methods for how to gain work experience or look for career opportunities
Relate a field of study to career outcomes (applying theory to practice)
Access a support system during critical stages of your professional development
Learn from diverse perspectives and experiences
Gain direct access to powerful resources (people, websites, tools, etc.) within your profession
Identify strengths, skill gaps, and/or areas of improvement
Build the foundation for a lasting professional network

Mentor Roles and Guidelines

I will make myself available to my mentee in accordance with this agreement.
I will do my best to provide 24 hours’ notice if I need to reschedule a meeting.
I will be active in participating in the mentoring relationship and provide constructive feedback.
When I don’t have the answer, I will look to my network to make introductions to someone who may.
I will resolve any issues with my mentee. If an issue cannot be resolved, I will address it with the Program Coordinator.
I will keep all information shared by my mentee confidential, unless they give me permission to share it.
I will contact the Program Coordinator should any challenges arise.
I will complete a short final evaluation at the end of the formal mentorships (July), and suggest feedback to the Program Coordinator, if needed or requested.
